CFC Cause of the Week: Veterans

Federal employee with her hand over her heart standing in front of a sketch of the U.S. flag in the shape of the country.“On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind. As a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind.” – Dan Lipinski

Veterans Day gives us a chance to show gratitude to those who have served and continue to serve in the United States military. The gratitude and gestures associated with Veterans Day often overshadow the battle that many veterans face when they return home from deployments, are discharged from the military, or retire after many years of service.

There are currently 18.8 million veterans living in the United States, which is about 7.6% of the population. After they return home or leave the service, veterans may find themselves in need of housing, assistance entering the civilian workforce, or treatment to overcome physical and mental health issues, like post-traumatic stress disorder or substance abuse.

There are many CFC charities that assist veterans with housing, employment, and access to health care. Join a CFC charity in saying “thanks” to our veterans by ensuring they have the tools to succeed beyond their call of duty.

Here’s how you can make an impact:

  • $25 keeps one homeless veteran warm with a heavy wool blanket, knit hat, and gloves.
  • $50 assists a veteran with one month of food and medication for a therapy dog.
  • $200 trains a veteran with skills to enter the civilian workforce.
